A little about Ian

Ian Lyall (Ianly)

Ian was born in Glasgow in 1954 and moved to Dundee in 1972 to study Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Here he developed his talents, working loosely with bold colours in oils under the guidance of contemporary artists, such as Alberto Morrocco, David McClure, Jack Knox and Dennis Buchan.

After graduating, in 1976, Ian trained as an art therapist and a social worker. His love of engaging disadvantaged groups with art lead to a successful lecturing career at Dundee College, where he taught art and outdoor education to students with learning difficulties/behaviourial problems for many years.

Ian took early retirement in 2012 and now dedicates more time to his love of painting, bringing his idiosyncratic style and colourful palette to familiar images of his adopted city. He is passionate about painting local subjects such as Dundee Law, The Rail bridge, The V&A museum and other iconic landmarks and scenes around this bonnie city. He also finds inspiration whilst wandering along the paths in Balgay park and has many vivid canvases depicting the autumnal hues of its magnificent trees.

His paintings and prints have featured in many exhibitions and hang in many private collections throughout the world from Lochee to Los Angeles.

They are particularly loved by Dundonians wherever the wind takes them……
